Special Meeting

Attendance: Mayor Tom Eagles, Deputy Mayor Gary Harding, Councillor Tony Wright, Councillor Tim Corbin, Councillor Sharon DeWitt

Mayor Eagles opened the meeting.
His Worship advised he called an emergency meeting to address the Canada Day Celebrations.
Mayor Eagles stated since the planning of Canada Day there has been the discovery of unmarked graves of children near residential schools in Kamloops and Saskatchewan. His Worship advised it is important for a government body to respect everyone and to address the issue at hand.
Mayor Eagles asked council for their thoughts on the cancellation of this year’s July 1st celebration. Councillor Wright advised the festivities should be cancelled. Councillor DeWitt agreed with cancelling July 1st. Deputy Mayor Harding stated we have no other choice but to cancel our celebrations this year. Councillor Corbin noted this is certainly a horrific situation that has taken place. He advised in speaking with people over the weekend they thought the celebrations should move forward.
Marty advised that Sky Fireworks noted that those who ordered fireworks from this company had cancelled their order. He noted that out of respect he felt the celebrations should be cancelled.
Councillor DeWitt stated its still Canada Day but in light of what has happened that it would be insensitive and inappropriate to council with the celebrations.
Discussion
Mayor Eagles questioned what council wants to do. His Worship asked that council entertain a motion to cancel July 1st, 2021 festivities;

Mayor Eagles advised council can discuss possibly celebrating NB Day.
Marty will take down the advertising on the sign by the road and advise the press of the cancellation.
